Safety officials have recently determined the running track near the Military Personnel Flight building is safe to use.
Shortly after initial completion in 2005, heavy equipment rolled over the track damaging it in several areas.
The heavy equipment damaged the rubberized surface of the running track used to cushion runners from the asphalt surface.
‘‘This has been evaluated by safety and determined not to be a concern,” said Maj. Derek D. Bonenclark, 316th Contracting Squadron commander. ‘‘The three-eighths-inch difference is simply the difference between the asphalt and the missing rubberized surface to be installed on top.”
Repairs to the rubberized surface must meet certain weather requirements first, which open a narrow window of opportunity during the year.
‘‘Required temperatures must be high enough, no rain for a specified period, etc.,” said Major Bonenclark. ‘‘Striping will be added if a contractor isn’t found in a reasonable time in order to improve the appearance of the track during the interim period prior to final repair.”
Safety cones on the track will be removed by a contractor to eliminate poor appearance in the area.
‘‘Runners may find that running over surfaces that aren’t finished, the track isn’t as springy,” said the major. ‘‘The awareness and the fact that there’s a slight dip are worth keeping in mind while running or walking.”
The estimated time of completion for repairs to the track is no later than the end of November.
