Nov. 22, 1963: First lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the newly sworn in President Lyndon Johnson, and his wife, Claudia Taylor Johnson, land at Andrews Air Force Base in a VC-137 aircraft carrying the casket of the late President John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy’s body is subsequently transported to Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Nov. 22, 1968: The Spad XVI biplane belonging to Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell departs Andrews on board a C-124 Globemaster for its trip to the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
Nov. 23, 1987: A ribbon-cutting for the newly renovated Liberty Dining Hall took place with the commanders of five Andrews organizations participating.
Nov. 24, 1970: The 1st Helicopter Squadron is the first organization to have two of its aircraft accepted for display in the Air Force Museum.
Nov. 23, 1969: Andrews’ role in Operation ‘‘Garden Plot,” the effort to curb civil disturbances in the D.C. area, ended on this day.
Nov. 27, 1956: Airman 3rd Class Garry Hunter from the Air Police Squadron used CPR to save the life of a child of an Andrews staff sergeant. The child was driven to the main gate by his mother in search of help.
Nov. 28, 1985: A major fire gutted the interior of the historic Chapel 2 on Thanksgiving Day.
